Avon Waste has been providing waste management services across regional Western Australia since 1980. Today, the business has 39 Local Government contracts, three landfill management contracts and collects approximately 64,500 bins every week.
With decades of experience in waste collection, company director Ashley Fisher has experienced a number of hot-load incidents, some causing significant damage to collection vehicles. With lithium-ion batteries increasingly entering the waste stream, the company recognised the need to strengthen fire protection across its fleet.
Avon Waste recently contacted ENCAPS to install its first BlazeCut F-500 EA Fire Suppression System on a waste collection vehicle. The 5-nozzle system uses a 16-litre cylinder containing F-500 EA solution, providing coverage throughout the waste hopper and into the body. Importantly, the system can be activated by the driver from inside the cabin, allowing the driver to initiate suppression without needing to approach the fire or exit the vehicle.
For Avon Waste, this is about reducing the potential consequences of a garbage truck fire - protecting its drivers, its fleet, the community and the continuity of essential waste collection services.

F-500 EA - Lithium Battery Fire

Garbage Truck Fire Mitigation

Activated from the cabin, the system offers 50 seconds of suppression via 5 nozzles and a 3% solution of F-500 EA. The aim of the system is to assist in the reduction and intensity of hot loads in the industry and minimise the risk to the driver. NFPA 18A 7.7 Fuel Neutralisation Test
To be listed and recognised as an Encapsulating Agent the product successfully perform the NFPA 18A 7.7 Fuel Neutralisation Test (Pan Lock Up Demo). This video demonstrates F-500 EA performing this test, along with extinguishing a nearby tyre fire with the tested mixture.
F-500 EA Extinguishes Lithium Battery fire in 10 Seconds
Watch F-500 EA® in action as it tackles a lithium-ion battery fire during rigorous testing at Fraunhofer HHI in Goslar, Germany. Temperatures were monitored at five key locations. In a dramatic demonstration, a 3% F-500 EA® solution rapidly cools the fire from 338°C (640°F) to just 16°C (61°F) in only 47 seconds.
